Fall 2011 Trends Already in Your Closet

Monday, July 18, 2011

Fall is right around the corner, so I am sure many of you are ready to begin updating your wardrobe with a few trendy pieces. So after spending some time reviewing Glamour’s Fall 2011 List of Wearable Trends,  I selected my top 5 favorites (polka dots, maxi skirts, the high-slit dress, working-girl dress and bright pants) to share with you and provide some inspiration as you begin shopping for your fall wardrobe.

POLKA DOTS
Marc Jacobs and Diane von Furstenberg, Fall-Winter 2011

(1) Polka dots can be an easy trend to add for the fall. I always see this print when I am out thrifting. Vintage blouses, silk scarves, pencil skirts, dresses and I can go on and on. If you are a little shy about this trend, start by choosing an accessory such as a belt, handbag or shoes. Or to make a fashion statement try pairing polka dots with stripes or a floral print.

MAXI-SKIRTS & COZY SWEATERS

Max Azria and Tracy Reese, Fall-Winter 2011
(2) Maxi-Skirts & Cozy Sweaters will be the easiest transition from Summer to Fall, especially for those of you who rocked the maxi trend this season. All you have to do now is add a chunky, cozy sweater, boots and a scarf to create a chic look for a great weekend look.

THE SLIT-UP TO THERE SKIRT
Christian Siriano, Jenni Kayne and Diane von Furstenberg, Fall-Winter 2011
(3) The Slit-Up to There Skirt is the perfect look for those upcoming holiday parties. Although the temperatures will be dropping, the slits will be rising. But I think it's just the right amount of skin exposed for the "grown and sexy" woman.

THE WORKING GIRL DRESS
Luca Luca, Adam and Jill Stuart, Fall-Winter 2011

(4) The Working Girl Dress is one of my most favorite trends. You really can't go wrong with this look. By the way, if you haven't noticed, I am obsessed with dresses, especially vintage ones. I love wearing textured tights with them too. My motto is: when in doubt, wear a dress.

THE BRIGHT PANTS
Yigal Azrouel and DKNY, Fall-Winter 2011

(5) The Bright Pants will bring a smile during those cold wintry mornings when you have run those errands or head to the 9-5 job. This should also be an easy trend to transition from summer to Fall. Just add a blazer, chunky sweater or cardigan.

Just remember that with any trend, to make it work, you have to make it your own. Make sure it suits your style and lifestyle.  Also trends come and go, while some stay around for a couple of seasons. So choose wisely which ones you want to invest in or be frugal.

Shop your closet first, some of these trends you probably already have. Then if needed, search your local thrift store. It’s an inexpensive investment to determine if you would like a certain look.  Plus there is no guilt from paying full price for items that may end up in your closet unloved.

So, are you feeling a little bit inspired? Which trend would you incorporate into your wardrobe?

  15. Wow, I love the polka dot trend. And here I thought I was out of "style"... I just bought three fabulous polkadot dresses when I was out thrifting recently. And the maxi/sweater trend! Love it! I had wondered how I could still wear my maxis in the winter. Thanks for sharing.
