Two Stylish Kays: August 2011

La Pura Vida (The Good Life)

Tuesday, August 30, 2011

Dress- 2b bebe (bebe Outlets)/ Shoes- BCBG (Platos Closet)/ Clutch- Angie & Lola (Value Village Thrift Dept Store)/  Necklace worn as a bracelet- Kohls/ Earrings & Bangle- borrowed from my Mom

Without a doubt, like the Costa Ricans say, I'm just La Pura Vida! On Sunday, I spent the evening with Beres Hammond (in my head LOL)...but I did finally attend the concert. It was originally scheduled on August 6th, but was rescheduled because the venue was struck by lightning and it would take hours before power would be restored.

This is the dress that I wore to the concert. It is a little sexier than the initial outfit, but still very classy.

For those of you wondering, I promise I do have more earrings, but this pair is just my fave when I want the glam-girl look. I admit I am a one trick pony when it comes to accessories..but I am working on being more adventurous.

Lastly, yesterday was the sixth year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, one of the deadliest Hurricanes in US History. Some of you may already know, but for those of you that may not, my family  evacuated to Atlanta because of Hurricane Katrina.

It was a very traumatic experience for us, with a bittersweet ending. (read my interview viaThe Buzz In the City)  I am very grateful that today I have a taste of Pura Vida! Surviving Hurricane Katrina has taught me to enjoy life, celebrate every moment and savor every memory. Are you living La Pura Vida?

Just Make It Good

Skirt-Ice Nine and Belt (Goodwill of North Georgia)/ Top- DKNY (Sip & Swap Event)/ Shoes- Steve Madden (Marshalls)/ Watch- Michael Kors (Macys)/ Earrings- Borrowed from my mom/ Assorted Bracelets

This skirt is one of favorite thrifted finds. I fell in love with the color, the print and the flirty fit. Plus, the pleats reminded me of my skirt that I wore in catholic school.

So I was so excited to wear it to the Beres Hammond concert earlier this month. My friends and I had been looking forward to a great evening listening and dancing the night away with one of our favorite reggae artists.

But it was a rainy evening and when we arrived, the concert was cancelled because lightning caused a power outage. What a bummer!!! But there is always a way to make a "good" of a bad situation.

Two of my BFFs (Rita & Amavi) and I ended up going to Embrace Saturdays. It is a Caribbean party held every Saturday night at Thrive Lounge in downtown Atlanta. After about 3 hours of dancing, we posed for this picture and as you can tell we made the best of such a disappointing situation. We had a great time!!!

This is always my approach in life. No matter how bad something seems, I try to find one positive in it. I'm in control of whether I decide to consumed by what is happening or turn it all around. How do you manage to handle situations that don't always go as planned?

P.S. The concert is rescheduled for this Sunday, August 28th

THRIFTY THURSDAYS: Three Style Rules You Can Break

Thursday, August 18, 2011

Stand out from the crowd! Create a look that is all your own! Some style rules are meant to be broken....right? If you are ready to be a fashion rebel, start with these three style rules.

1. You can't mix prints. I admit that breaking this rule is somewhat of a challenge to do effortlessly. But the end result is always such a chic, stylish look. My advice is to choose a dominant color and make sure both prints have that same dominant color. Need some inspiration check out my two favorites below and Everybody Everywear.

2. Take Off An Accessory Before Leaving the House

Ok this is one rule that I will have to work hard at breaking. I always play down my accessories. But since learning about the term “arm party” and participating in the Bloggers Do It Better Arm Party ChallengeI have been inspired to step out of my comfort zone. These are two of my arm party inspirations.

3. Don't wear white after Labor Day. The rule of thumb is avoid summery fabrics and choose the right hue for fall, like an off-white. One celebrity who lives by that rule is Lisa Raye (see pic below). She wears white every day of week, in any season of the year.

What is one style rule that you are willing to break?

THRIFTY THURSDAYS: The Perfect Ten

Thursday, August 11, 2011

The Perfect Ten are the classic pieces that every woman should have in her wardrobe. They will take you from day-to-night and transition from season-to-season.

1. The Black Pantsuit will give you maximum use because you can wear these pieces separately.  Invest in a quality tailored pantsuit or a black suit jacket with matching skirt or pants. Select one that reflects your style and personality.

2. The Perfect Pair of Jeans in a dark rinse can be dressed up or down. Choose a pair that fits well and flatters your assets.

3. Plain Black Pumps that can take you from the office to happy hour are a must-have in your closet.

4. A White Shirt is always stylish whatever way you wear it. From the basic white-tee, to a tailored collared shirt, a great white shirt is a must have.

5. A "Big" Leather Bag large and sturdy enough to carry your essentials for the office; weekend errands and traveling.

6. The Little Black Dress is a great piece that can be dressed up for that last minute cocktail party or worn casually.

7. The Pencil Skirt is a classic piece that flatters every woman's figure in all the right places. When selecting a pencil skirt, the hem should hit about an inch above the knee.

8. Thomas Burberry designed the first Trench Coat in 1901, as a raincoat for army officers. Since then this raingear has become synonymous with class and style. It is versatile and comes in a variety of fabric and color options.

9. When you buy a pair of knee high boots, you can be assured that those boots will always be in fashion. Whether you wear your knee high boots with skirts or pants, you'll feel stylish and chic in your boots.

10. A Signature Piece that reminds people of you. High heels, a pearl necklace, a short haircut, the list goes on. It should be all you and reflects your personality. My signature piece is my rose gold Michael Kors Watch amd my short haircut.

EBEW: Breaking The Rules

Top(is a dress)- The Limited/ Shorts- (Value Village)/Necklace- Loehmanns/ Shoes- Jessica Simpson (Marshalls)/ Watch- Michael Kors (Macys)/ Bracelet & Earrings- Goodwill

Here is my look for this month's Everybody Everywear challenge-- mixed prints.  I kept the look simple and chic by staying within the same color scheme and added understated accessories, plus my faithful nude pumps.

My top is actually a strapless dress that I bought from the The Limited about three years ago.

The shorts I got while out thrifting at one of my favorite stores, Value Village. I fell in love with the huge white dots on the black background. I tucked the dress it into my shorts to create this look.

The necklace and earrings resembled polka dots, so I added them for an extra touch. And of course my statement watch that I wear with everything.

I am so used to pairing printed tops with solid bottoms (or vice versa). This challenge gave me a chance to break a style rule and it felt empowering, plus it shakes up my style. What style rules do you live by? Are there any style rules you are willing to break?

BDIB: A Solo Arm Party

Wednesday, August 3, 2011

Top/ DKNY (Value Village)/ Jeans- Seven of Mankind (Saks Fifth Avenue Off 5th)/ Shoes- Charlotte Russe (Goodwill)/ Watch- Michael Kors/ Cuff Bracelet- Dots/ Necklace-Forever 21

I contemplated if I would join in the fun this month for the Bloggers Do It Better Arm Party Challenge
What is an arm party? Well it's a term coined by the The Man Repeller, a fellow fashion blogger to describe the style of wearing multiple bracelets, watches, bangles etc. at the same time on your arms.

Well, I hate to be a party pooper, so here is how I rocked my "solo" arm party.

You see when it comes to accessories, I have a few set pieces that I seem to wear all the time.  A necklace, earrings, watch and a bracelets is a lot of jewelry, so I usually pick one as the spotlight and keep the others a bit understated....you know to avoid competition.

Plus I obey Coco Chanel's word of advice “Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take one thing off."  Do you have an accessories style rule that you strictly follow?
