Two Stylish Kays: January 2017

What I Wore: Tweed Coat + Sweater Dress

Monday, January 30, 2017

One of my favorite fashion pieces to thrift is outerwear. This is one item that you will truly get the best bang for your bucks, When selecting a winter coat, I always look for a style that is timeless and can last for a few seasons. Since a winter coat is the most important piece you wear over your clothing, I shop for coats that are trendy enough to make a fashion statement alone and a coat that I can wear with sweaters too. The details, fabric and length are other things I consider before making a purchase. So when I noticed this leather trim tweed winter coat by Cynthia Rowley, while thrifting at Intown Thrift Store, I knew that I hit the jackpot. This coat met all of my needs! It retails for $400, but the thrift store price was under $7. This tweed coat is my go-to winter coat when I leaving home to head to work. It is a perfect piece that I can wear during the daytime. Plus if I have to meet up with friends for an after-work happy hour date, I still look very stylish.

Stylish Review: LuLaRoe Julia Dress

Monday, January 23, 2017

I am so excited that I had the opportunity to review LuLaRoe, a clothing line that I recently discovered. Tiffany King, a LuLaRoe independent consultant reached out to me and asked if I would be interested in reviewing a few pieces from their collection. I had never heard of this clothing brand before. But after reading the reviews, learning more about the collection and the company structure, I was very intrigued and more than ready to give it a try. In case you are not familiar with LuLaRoe, their collection of women’s clothing, include dresses, skirts, cardigans and leggings. Tiffany sent me the Julia DressLindsay KimonoLeggings and the Classic-T.

Today, I will review the Julia Dress.

Events: January 2017 Thrifting Atlanta Bus Tours (RECAP)

Friday, January 20, 2017

What I love more than thrift shopping, is to share my passion and be an inspiration so others would try thrift shopping too. In 2011, I started the Thrifting Atlanta community because I wanted to get the message out to as many people that I could, here in Atlanta and nationwide. Today our social network of over 30K members who are thrift shopping veterans and newbies, resale business owners and "thrifting" fashion bloggers. We enjoy thrifting at thrift, consignment and vintage shops. Through our in-person events including monthly thrift shopping bus tours, fashion swaps and our annual Thrifting Atlanta Fashion Week, we spread the joy and art of thrifting in the city we affectionately call home: ATLANTA!

The bus tours are a great way for thrifting newbies and experts, to learn more about the great thrift stores in Atlanta. We travel on a chauffeured bus to shop up to ten thrift, vintage and consignments stores on one weekend (Saturday and Sunday) each month. Shoppers enjoy exclusive discounts at each store and get a bag lunch too. But most importantly are the friendships developed during the day.

Last weekend we visited the following stores:
InTown Thrift, Goodwill Piedmont Store, Alexis Suitcase Consignment Buckhead, Out of the Closet Thrift Stores, My Best Friend's Closet Consignment, Ecologie Vintage, Cherokee Rose Shoppe, Buckhead Thriftique and Goodwill Johns Creek.

Check out a brief photo recap our thrift shopping day.

Thrifting Tips 101: Leave Thrift Store Empty Handed

Wednesday, January 18, 2017

IT'S OK TO LEAVE THE THRIFT STORE EMPTY HANDED: The joy of thrift shopping is being able to find items that you love at a good deal. You will have your good days and you will have some bad days. The good days are when you find so many items it is hard to decide which ones will make the ultimate cut. But the bad days are when you go and do not find anything worth even trying on. Trust me it happens to all of us, the thrift veterans and the newbies too. However, that should not leave you disappointed! It is OK to leave the thrift store empty handed.

New thrift shoppers define thrift shopping success as leaving with a bag of stuff. They buy things just because they are on sale or "it's only a dollar". After a while your closet will be filled up with stuff you do not love. Do not ever feel that you have to buy something to validate your thrift shopping trip. Don't ever think that it was a waste of time, just because you did not buy something. Just know that you can go thrift shopping another day! The main thing you do not want to do is to waste money buying items you have no use for.

How do you feel when you go thrift shopping and leave the store Empty Handed?

What I Wore: Poncho Sweater + Skinny Jeans + Ankle Boots

Monday, January 16, 2017

When it comes to selecting a poncho sweater, you must try it on to get the full effect. I almost let this beauty get away because it was so unflattering on the hanger. I am a big advocate for trying all items before making a decision to purchase, especially dresses. However, when it comes to tops and blouses, I am not so excited to try them one. When I saw this poncho sweater on the rack, it looked like a pile of knit fabric and it did not appeal to my style. Then, as I looked closer, I noticed the sequins and plunging neckline. That is what caught my attention. I tried it on and I was immediately in love!  It is now one of my favorite thrifted finds. I wore it this past weekend, while hosting the Thrifting Atlanta Bus Tour . I paired mine with my very old and faithful Express skinny jeans. I cuffed the jeans a little past my ankle, so I can highlight my thrifted ankle boots.

The brand of the poncho sweater is MODA International, which retails at department stores like Macy's for $49. The Goodwill Stone Mountain, GA thrift store price was $6. I also thrifted the ankle boots the Goodwill Covington Store. The brand is Mossimo Supply Co which retails at Target for $37. The Goodwill thrift store was price $7.

Thrifting Tips 101: Wear Your Thrifting Uniform

Thursday, January 12, 2017

WEAR YOUR THRIFTING UNIFORM: If you are a die hard thrift shopper or a newbie, wearing a thrifting uniform is essential in your thrift shopping success! There are so many thrift shops that do not have dressing rooms and if they do have dressing rooms, there are usually people standing in line waiting to use it. Then they often have signs posted indicating a try-on limit. It is usually a small number like 3-4 pieces at a time. Who truly has that amount of items to try on? Especially at a thrift store!

So to avoid the hassle, of wasting thrifting time standing in a dressing room line or only be allotted a certain number of items to try on, you should make sure that you have on some type of thrifting uniform.

A thrifting uniform will allow you to try on clothes without having to get undressed. Ditching the drama of using a dressing room. Wear leggings (or a skirt, dress) a close fitting top and shoes that are easy to slip on and off. Plus wear a cross body bag to free up your hands for searching the racks.

Do you wear a thrifting uniform when you go thrift shopping? What does your thrifting uniform consist of?

What I Wore: Tall Brown Fringe Boots

Monday, January 9, 2017

I have wanted to add fringe to my wardrobe for a while now. About two years ago, I added several types of fringe fashion to my thrift wish list (HERE). The thrift wish list is like my vision board for the fashion pieces. The goal is to purchase the items on the wish list from a thrift, consignment or vintage store. The wish list also keeps on track while thrifting, that way I tend to buy items that I truly love.

I purchased these tall brown fringe boots from Alexis Suitcase Consignment in Johns Creek. I highly reccommend shopping Alexis Suitcase Consignment for designer shoes and handbags. You will not be disappointed.

The fringe boots are from the brand Boutique 9. They are leather and suede with a nice height of heel. Priced at $27.99, the fringe boots were a steal. You can find similiar style (HERE and HERE). Due to the color tag sale that day, I saved an additional 10% off. Also, I shopped with my Thrifting Atlanta tote bag, so I received an exclusive discount, making my total less than $21.

With a little determination, patience and favor from the thrift fairy, I hit the jackpot and can now scratch fringe off of my thrift wish list!

Thrifting Tips 101: January Best Month For Thrift Shopping

Tuesday, January 3, 2017

Make sure to go thrift shopping this month. You can download the Thrifting Atlanta app (Google Play and Apple Store ) to locate stores in your area. The thrift, consignment and vintage stores are filled to the brim with last minute donations from the shopaholic who cleaned out her closet to that, unwanted Christmas gifts and overstock from the manufacturer who needs to get a tax credit. January is truly the best time to really find the best deals!

Thrift Quickie: Back By Popular Demand Consignment $1 Sale (RECAP)

I attended a Dollar Sale hosted by Back By Popular Consignment in Lilburn. The fashion collection at this consignment is filled to the brim with designer clothing, shoes, accessories and handbags too. The Dollar Sale event happens several times throughout the year. It is sale that is also a fundraiser. So the money generated is donated to support a local charity. That is one of the reasons I enjoy going. Because I can great designer fashion without breaking the bank and support a good cause. I call that a win win situation. One main difference between this dollar sale, compared to previous dollar sales, is the amount of items available. In the past the sale would boast about 15,000+ pieces (reviewed HERE & HERE). That sale would have hundreds of people in attendance. This one was much smaller with only 2,000 pieces. However, it was just as fun and I did very well.
