Fabuless Thrifter: Cheap but Chic

Thursday, May 31, 2012

This week's Fabuless Thrifter is Tabitha Sewer of Cheap but Chic. She was recently introduced to thrift shopping by a co-worker about a year ago. Tabitha says that she used to actually turn her nose up when it came to thrifting as the thought of wearing a stranger's clothes was not too comforting.

Her favorite place to thrift is at Thrift City in Newport News, VA where she racks up on blazers and jumpsuits that would cost over $30 each in a retail store. "The most exciting thing about thrifting is when I actually put the articles of clothing together, people think I spent so much on my clothes when in reality, my entire outfit is between $2-$20," says Tabitha.

Her Fabuless Look:
Vintage Earrings: $7 Cheap But Chic Earring Line
Necklace: Thrift Store: $1
Flower: Claire's (Purchased long ago)
Blazer: $1 Thrift Store
Tank: $5 Charlotte Russe
Jeans: (Purchased long ago)

Her favorite piece:
My favorite piece of this out fit is probably my gold antique necklace.  If you follow me on my facebook blog "Cheap but Chic", you'll notice that I wear the necklace in almost evey outfit. LOL!  I just love it.

Her inspiration to wear this outfit:
When I think about Chanel , I think about the very popular vintage Chanel tweed suits.  I love the classic look of these suits and I wanted to put an outfit together that was urban, yet classic at the same time.  So I paired the tweed blazer with a pair of skinny jeans and to make it a bit more classy, I found the black rose laying around my closet that I purchased years ago, and decided to add it to the blazer.  People always think that this blazer is from some expensive department store but guess what guys, it was only $1.

Her most "fabuless" find:
My most fabulous find are my light blue YSL jeans for $6.  YSL jeans are hundreds of dollars and I never imagined that I would ever own a pair that are actually on trend.

Bald Bold Natural Hair Style

Tuesday, May 29, 2012

The big chop is my bald bold start on my natural hair style journey. I call it a journey because it has been a long time coming to this decision. For me it is a symbol of change; confidence in my personal style; a chance to embrace and love-on my natural hair; and lastly freedom from relaxers and sitting under the hair dryer..LOL.

This is actually my second time doing the big chop. I did it about 5 years ago when I began to experience extreme hair breakage. Then, I vowed to never get another relaxer only to eat my words and get a relaxer within a year. My hair texture was very difficult to manage, so I wore wigs, weaves and braids but those looks were so time consuming and drained my wallet. So my relaxed pixie cut was the alternative: short, sassy and easy to maintain. But deep down inside I still had a burning desire to wear my hair natural.

I always managed to find myself surrounded by so many women who wear their hair natural. Especially when I participated in Fro Fashion Week, as a fashion retailer and workshop presenter, and stuck out like a sore thumb. This year I will fit right in...LOL! So this time around, I am more confident about my decision because I have a great network of natural hair women who I can reach out to for advice, tips and support. My goal it to grow my hair to a nice shoulder length so I can have big hair like my favorite curly hair piece.

So enough about my hair and onto my other secret obsession the jumpsuit! I thrifted this black jumpsuit at my local Value Village in Roswell. Of course no hanger appeal, but when I tried it on, I knew it was a winner.

Jumpsuit- Saint Germain (Value Village in Roswell)/ Belt- H&M (B & R Thrift Store)/ Shoes- BCBG (Goodwill Grasslands)/ Clutch- Vintage (Goodwill Coca Beach Florida)/ Earrings- Vintage (Last Chance Thrift Store) Arm Candy- Beaded Wrist Band (Fly's Nest), MK Rose Gold Watch (Macys), Assorted Bracelets (Marshalls and B & R Thrift Store)

So what do you think of my new look from head to toe?

So Stylish: GUM Productions

Brittany Manson of G.U.M. Productions

This week's So Stylish Spotlight is on Brittany Manson of G.U.M. Productions. I confess that I am a serial entrepreneur and the only way that can manage my multiple businesses is through the services that she provides. One of my favorite services that she recently provided for me was live Social Media Commentary at SWAPNISTA Atlanta. She gave my social network moment to moment updates, pictures of the event and engaged in dialogue. She actually went over the daily tweet limit and was put in twitter timeout. That is how hard she goes in for her clients! I hope you enjoy our interview below!

What is GUM Productions?
G.U.M. Productions is a multi-faceted company providing services to small businesses and individuals that generate an increase of activity, productivity, sales, and exposure through social media management, freelance writing, and event coordinating.

What inspired you start your business?
After being laid off from my job, I immediately started looking for other jobs similar to the one I had. I felt like I was going through the motions so I started to contemplate going into business for myself. Every aspect of my business was something I had been doing on my own already. "If you can do something for free and still be encouraged to do it, that might be your calling."

I consulted a lot of friends and family on the decision and everyone was very supportive and behind me 100%. The day I finally decided, something inside me said "Do it" and that was it. A few hours later, I got a text from a very good friend asking when I was going to start my business because they're ready to be my first client. And the rest is history!

Who is your target client?
Small businesses or individuals that are trying to grow and gain more exposure through social media updates, launch parties, impeccable writeups on your brand/business, etc. I'm also targeting individuals that are looking to attend or host quality events around the city that are still cost efficient.
What sets you apart from your competitors?
Our name says it all--At G.U.M Productions, We're Giving.U.More than what most competitors are giving. The services that you find here, you'd have to look to several different businesses to find. We can create a package that's suitable to your needs as well as your budget.

What's popping at GUM Productions?
We have a few signature events and services that we offer at G.U.M. Productions. For the events, one of our most popular is Hidden Agenda: Life's Ulterior Motive.

Hidden Agenda is a scavenger hunt where individuals are given a list and have to find the items on the list from the people of the opposite sex in the room in the time given.

Whoever finds the most (and can prove what they found) gets a Hidden Agenda gift bag. This event can be customized for whatever type of crowd that's attending: Networking professionals, Singles, Couples, etc.

Our newest signature event is Sip and Shoot: The Photoshoot Day Party. Attendees can purchase various photo packages, as well as services such as styling and makeup.

They'll then be given the star studded treatment with their very own celebrity style photo shoot equipped with music, wine, and light refreshments.

Be sure to connect with G.U.M. Productions on Facebook and Twitter for all of your small business's social exposure and branding needs.

The Big Chop: My Natural Hair Journey Begins

Saturday, May 26, 2012

I finally did the big chop (transitioning from relaxed hair to natural hair). Two of my favorite Bloggers (Rush Our Fashion & Fly Won) inspired me, plus several of my readers and close friends that are #teamnatural.

So this is a sneek peak until my big reveal on Tuesday! I can't wait to show you my new look, from head to toe! Hope you love it as much as I do!

Fabuless Thrifter: Sammy Davis Vintage

Thursday, May 24, 2012

This week's Fabuless Thrifter is Sammy Davis of Sammy Davis Vintage. She started thrift store shopping at age 16 and been going strong for 10 years. "I should thrift a medal to commemorate that," she said. "I love the Goodwill Outlet in Queens -- you just never know what you're going to find, and at only $1.79 a pound it's hard to let anything go!"

Her Fabuless Look:
Top, 1970s vintage ($5.99)
Skirt, '80s vintage ($4.99)
Bracelets, compliments of The Vintage Mistress on Etsy
Watch, vintage compliments of my Grandmother's collection
Hair garland, compliments of Meg Allan Cole Crafts
Gladiator Sandals, Aldo ($60)

Her favorite piece:
My favorite piece in the whole look are the flowers in my hair -- made for me compliments (i.e. free!) by Meg Allan Cole Crafts.

Her inspiration to wear this outfit:
It's been quite the chilly winter in NYC, but on this day the sun was peeking from behind the clouds and I could feel its rays glow on my face with warmth! So to celebrate the advent of spring I paired a hot color this season that's also representative of springtime's growth -- bright green! -- with a quintessential '70s clothing staple, a white boho top loose enough to comfortably tuck into my maxi. Gladiator sandals and a DIY flower garland in my hair rounded out the look to make me into a vintage style flower child!

Her most "fabuless" find:
I'd have to say it was the Hermes scarf (a '90s fashion find!) I "accidentally" (no joke!) thrifted from my hometown Salvation Army in 2010. I loved the pattern -- a variety of African countries around various jungle animals in browns, beiges, blacks and gold -- and bought it for a mere $.50. Little did I know upon returning home, I'd notice the Hermes insignia and freak out!

I had the pleasure of being the featured personal stylist at the Spoiled Diva's booth during the Sassy City Chicks Fashion Bash in Atlanta. I certainly enjoyed helping her customers select from her fab pieces and of course answer any styling questions that they had.

Here I am with THE Spoiled Diva, Chakiva Felder. She said she wore her big hair as a tribute to the late Donna Summer. I absolutely love her look for the event! She is representing her brand very well.

Our very first customer was Parker Simmons of Everyday Runway 365. She really didn't need my help, she knew exactly what Spoiled Diva piece she wanted to bring home with her.

Another familiar face in the crowd was Alicia of Alley Pie Vintage.  She scored a paired of ruffled hoop earrings!

The newest member of the Spoiled Diva family added a fab rocker chic wristlet to her accessories wardrobe!

After all that shopping and styling, it was time to get some energy boosters, like cupcakes and margaritas. Thank goodness my fave Atlanta cupcake baker was in the building. I ate three key lime flavored cupcakes from The Cupcake Genie

Then I needed a beverage to quench my thirst. Thank you Sinless Margarita a low calorie cocktail mix! So refreshing and so tasty, thankfully it only has 5 calories. I will confess I had 12.5 calories worth. *giggle* My third helping was only a half glass full.

Now I was ready to go check out the other vendors who where in the building. Here are the lovely ladies of London love Marlo. A high end designer consignment boutique in Atlanta. It is a private by appointment only boutique.

I also meet the lovely ladies of mbellish. They own a mobile vintage boutique. So they can set up shop at any location. I loved loved their pieces.

RESALE THERAPY: Back By Popular Demand Consignment

Friday, May 18, 2012

Need a little resale therapy? Join me every other Friday when I feature one of my favorite local (or national resale stores)! I will also host a resale therapy session at the store, so you can shop to your heart's content. Please feel free to email me your suggestions too for your fave locations to host a resale therapy session.

Today, I introduce you to Back by Popular Demand Consignment (BBPD). I have been stalking their facebook page for months because they always seem to have such great designer bags at such fabuless prices. So I was so excited to have the opportunity to visit the Marietta location to confirm that this store is just as fabuless in person. The staff was very friendly, the store was very well organized and just as I imagined, it was a designer lover's playground.

Below is my interview with store owner, Melissa Baxter. She started working in the consignment industry at the age of 15 and purchased BBPD when she was only 20 years old. "It's been a wild fun ride that changes daily", she said. "I love getting to know all my customers about their lives, kids, dogs and "what's happening."

What do you enjoy most about owning your boutique?
I love the challenge of never knowing what is or isn't coming in. I am blessed to be surrounded by the most loyal and fantastic employees ever and God is always showing and teaching me through my store.

The entrance to Back By Popular Demand Consignment- Marietta

Inside the store. Everything is so organized by color, department and size.
What is the biggest challenge?
Keeping items on display! No sooner do we put together a display than it's gone. Keeping Louis Vuitton in stock is a big challenge too because it usually sells in less than a few hours, so we have to take a picture just to prove that we had it!

Why should women today shop consignment vs thrift or vintage stores?
Consignment is the creme of the crop. At a consignment store we have pre-screened thousands of pieces to give you the best selection and you don't have to worry about finding holes, smells, and stains later, plus you will pay 50=90% off retail.
Why consign and shop at BBPD?
Because we make it easy and fast to make money. We offer cash or consignment options at all our stores and never require an appointment. We truly have a new store to offer you every day. On any given day we add over 800 new pieces to the floor between the 3 stores.

What's Haute at Back By Popular Demand?
Brands baby! From Gap to Gucci we've got it all. Twice a year we host a $1 sale were everything is only $1 no tax, you can find awesome items from ann taylor, chico's, and even some designer items for a $1. We turn our inventory ever 60 days, so at the end of the season items that did not sell are sold for a $1. It's a huge event and there are usually 5000 (+) pieces to choose from and they all sell out in under 60 minutes-all the proceeds go to a selected charity of the year.

Back by Popular Demand Consignment is the longest established ladies consignment store in Georgia. Opened in 1980 by Dorothy York, it was later purchased in 2002 by Melissa Baxter. BBPD boasts three locations to serve their clients:

Fabuless Thrifter: Fashionista Styles

Thursday, May 17, 2012

This week's Fabuless Thrifter is Niurka Davis of Fashionista Styles. Niurka's favorite place to thrift is at The Salvation Army on Wednesdays when everything is 50% off. She's been thrifting for about eight years, but really started venturing out within the last couple of years. Niurka loves the thrill of thrifting. She finds that it's great to know that she will find something fabulous and trendy with a vintage flair.

Her Fabuless Look

Her favorite piece in this outfit:
Definitely this Blouse! It is silk, comfy, and has that vintage-ess look I love!

Her inspiration to wear this outfit:
I really didn’t put much thought into this one. I just love the skirt and this top had the matching blue that would be a perfect pair for my skirt.

I’ve found many over the years, but the most memorable was an old school Polo blazer with the perfect gold buttons.

What do you think of Niurka's outfit and the way she styled it?
