I attended the Alpha Derby Weekend at the Georgia World Congress Center. It is an annual fundraising event held on the first weekend of May, centered around the style and pageantry of one of the most well-known horse races in the world, The Kentucky Derby. This was my third year attending and I enjoy it because it is a party with a purpose, plus I love dressing up and wearing a derby hat.
Eight chapters of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. from across the metro-Atlanta area all collaborate to host a first-class experience while benefiting local non-profit education foundations.
This year, I took some time and carefully shopped my closet for my derby fashion. I came across this vintage dress that I purchased two years ago from Goodwill Lawrenceville. It was less than $8.
You know that the print caught my eye and I knew that I had to have it. This is only my second time wearing it. But this time I wanted to give the dress a more modern look. I took it to my seamstress and had the hem altered from midi length to above my knee. It was perfect. The Stuart Wietzman strappy heels and eel skin clutch are my staple classic pieces.
My fascinator is a sweet repeat. I wore it HERE two years ago to the 2017 Alpha Derby Weekend. Then, my thrift sister borrowed it and wore it HERE last year to the 2018 Alpha Derby Weekend. I was very tempted to buy another fascinator to wear this year. I feared the fashion police would remember.
I shared my concerns with my friends and their words of advice made me think about my brand. I always preach about buying quality items that are designed to last from season to season. Should I really care that others may notice my sweet repeat? Especially during this time when more and more people are shifting from fast fashion towards sustainable fashion?
I am so glad that I decided to recycle and reuse and wear the hat for the third time to the Alpha Derby Weekend. It was the perfect complement to my dress.
