Thrift Sisters Link Up: Clock Blocking

Wednesday, October 29, 2014

This week, Ayana and I styled our looks this week with blocks of color.  Be sure to stop by her Ayana's blog to get the details on her amazing black and white sweater and those super cute cap toe pumps. I styled my Anne Klein zebra print dress with a Steve Madden color block handbag.

Handbag $5: Steve Madden (Goodwill Grasslands)
Shoes $5: BCBG (Goodwill Johns Creek)
Total $11

Color blocking has been a trend for several seasons now. So if you have not tried it yet, you still have time, because color blocking is here to stay. One of the easiest ways to try out a new trend is through accessories.  I wore my zebra print dress as a neutral piece and used my handbag to add a subtle touch of color block.  Accessories are an effortless and inexpensive way to update your look and try out a trend.
How do you incorporate a new trend into your wardrobe?

Thrifted Trends: Jet Black Leather, Lace and Denim

Monday, October 27, 2014

Top $5: Papaya (Goodwill Johns Creek
Denim $7 bebe (Goodwill Johns Creek )
Total $14

One of my favorite colors is black. It is such an easy color to wear and it is a universal chic look on everyone. On the flip side, it can be very basic and produce a yawn at times. To prevent a boring look, I suggest styling black using varying fabrics and textures, it becomes more appealing and certainly makes a statement too. Also add classic or fun accessories, they will become the focal point of your outfit. Lastly if you incorporate a pop of color, make it subtle like a red lip or animal print pumps.

Last Minute Stylish Halloween Costumes

Saturday, October 25, 2014

I still can not believe that Halloween is less than a week away! Do you know what you are wearing? Honestly, I am not a die hard fan of the Halloween season, but I do participate in our company dress up contest. I do not like the traditional scary Halloween themed costumes, but instead prefer a more stylish pretty costume. The first place I shop and get my inspiration is in my closet. Below are a few looks that you too can discover from pieces that you already own.
1. Olivia Pope in Scandal: Wear your favorite pair of slacks, styled with a cape and long leather gloves or a trench coat and channel your inner Kerry Washington.

2. Beauty Pageant Contestants (Appearance Wear): We all have a sash and a tiara from our pageant days right? Just style it with a very trendy cocktail dress and voila you are ready to compete for the national or state title. This makes a great group costume too!

3. Beauty Pageant Contestants (Evening Wear): Same as above, but you would style your sash and tiara with an evening gown. This is the perfect opportunity to wear that prom dress or bridesmaid dress you have stashed in the back of your closet.

4. Beyonce in Flawless: Show them you are FLAWLESS! Style your flannel shirt with your cut off shorts, chunky necklace and ankle boots.

Dress $7: Swee Lo (Goodwill Peachtree Corners
Shoes $32- Sam Edelman Scarlett Pumps (Upscale Resale Consignment)
Handbag $1: Vintage (Goodwill Clearance Center FL)

You know that I have an obsession with vintage dresses, especially sequin and sparkly ones! My closet is filled with many of them. So I was excited that I could finally dust this one off and wear it to the Tastemaker Magazine B. FAB Awards Celebration. I had the honor of presenting the Best Style Thrifter Award and this was the perfect dress for such a special occasion.

When is the last time you wore a special occasion dress?

Thrift Sisters Link Up: Mad for Plaid

Wednesday, October 15, 2014

This week, Ayana and I are mad about plaid! Be sure to stop by her blog to get the details on how she styled her cropped plaid top and made it into a Fall look. I am wearing a plaid jumper and oversized pussy bow blouse.

Jumper $35: Voom by Joy Han (Designer Consigns
Blouse $3 No Label (Diva Diva Boutique)
Boots $9: Just Fab (Goodwill Johns Creek)
Handbag $3: Kenneth Cole (B & R Thrift Store)
Total $50

Plaid usually brings up memories of prep school uniforms or the "grunge" look from the 90s? When paired with the right pieces, it can be styled to look chic and sophisticated too. I used my oversized pussy bow blouse to give my plaid skirt jumper a more age appropriate look. The leggings and tall boots are a great complement too.

How do you style your mad for plaid looks?

Thrift Haul Score of the Week: Steve Madden Riding Boots

Friday, October 10, 2014

I scored these Steve Madden Riding Boots for $1.75 this past summer while thrifting at Park Ave Thrift Outlet Woodstock. Although I could not wear them immediately, they were worth the wait because boot season is right around the corner.

Park Ave Outlet Woodstock, at 9740 Main St, Woodstock, GA is one of my favorite thrift stores. It is about a 35 minute drive from my home, so I do not visit very often. But when I do I always manage to get some great items. The outlet store uses a one price strategy.

Every Friday, they stock the store with inventory that is cycled out from their regular location and everything is priced at $2. It is the best day to thrift because you will get first dibs on the newest inventory. Then from Friday through Thursday, the price drops 25 cents and the pricing schedule is as follows:

  • Friday $2
  • Saturday $1.75
  • Sunday $1.50
  • Monday $1.25
  • Tuesday $1.00
  • Wednesday 50 cents
  • Thursday 25 cents
On Thursday, they close at 1pm and spend the rest of the day re-stocking merchandise. My favorite days to shop is Saturday and Sunday. It is less crowded and you still have access to the best selection. I would never recommend going on Wednesday or Thursday, unless you have a specific reason and need to get items at that price. If you do go, brace yourself for crowds and limited inventory too.
